Requirements for modern throws and the methodology of initial training

The end result of all player movement on the court, with and without the ball, is a shot at the basket. The understanding of this position by the coach and the players provides an opportunity to increase motivation during drills that are designed to improve auxiliary playing skills. Without improving your ability to jerk, turn and stop, catch and pass the ball, and change direction quickly, a player can never be a great sniper.

Such a statement is important because a team’s defensive prowess is constantly increasing. And because of that, the demands on players to make shots at the basket are greatly increased.

Requirements for Modern Basketball Shooting.

B. Cousy and F. Power in their book “Basketball: Concepts and Analysis” identify two basic principles of shooting. They can be divided into two main groups:

a) mental;
b) physical.

  1. Mental principles are the ability to relax, focus and confidence.
  2. Physical principles are the execution of the throw on target and it includes the following factors:

a) the ability to hold the balance of the body, which fully enables the coordination of the movement of the torso, arms and legs;
b) the creation of effort;
c) calculation of the attack, in which each movement of the player in his development occurs in the right sequence and at the right moment;
d) the use of the fingertips to communicate to the ball the necessary trajectory of flight;
e) effective accompaniment.

In order to make an accurate shot at an opponent’s basket, it is necessary first of all to have a rational technique, stability of movements and their controllability. This observes the correct alternation of muscle tension and relaxation, mobility and strength of the hands, their final effort, as well as giving the best trajectory of the flight and rotation of the ball.

The trajectory of the ball is chosen according to the distance, height of the player, as well as the physical data and activity of countering defenders. Performing throws from medium and long-range positions, it is recommended to choose the optimal trajectory of the ball flight, when the highest point of the trajectory will be above the ring level about 1.4-2 meters. It is generally accepted that the most favorable angle of release of the ball, when throwing it over the basket, will be 58 degrees to the horizontal. Statistics show that at this angle of release, most players achieve the greatest results.

The throwing of the ball is usually done in a reverse rotation, which keeps the ball on the desired trajectory and results in a softer rebound if the shot is not quite successful. Reverse rotation also slows the ball down and increases the chances that it will miss the basket when it hits the hoop.
